Organic Certified Food in Spain: What It Means and Why It Matters

Hello, I’m Carsten Dreyer Christensen, owner of OrganicToGo, and I want to share some insights into what it truly means to have organic certified food, especially here in Spain, and why it matters when you choose your fruits, vegetables, and other organic products.

Organic Certified vs. Regular Organic

You might wonder, “Isn’t all organic food the same?” Not quite. There’s a big difference between foods labeled simply as organic fruits and vegetables and those that carry an official organic certification.

Regular organic produce often refers to products that are grown using natural methods, without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. While this is great, it doesn’t always guarantee a standardized quality or compliance with official organic farming regulations.

Organic certified food, on the other hand, has gone through a rigorous process and meets strict standards set by authorities in Spain and the European Union. This certification guarantees that:

  • The food is grown without synthetic chemicals, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
  • The farming practices used are environmentally sustainable, respecting soil health, water resources, and biodiversity.
  • Traceability is ensured from farm to table, giving you confidence in what you’re eating.
  • At OrganicToGo, we only offer organic certified fruits, vegetables, and products, because we want our customers to enjoy the real benefits of certified organic food.

How Do You Get Organic Certification in Spain?

In Spain, obtaining organic certification is a formal and carefully controlled process, overseen by Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA) and certified control bodies recognized by the EU. Here’s how it works:

  1. Application and Farm Inspection
Farmers submit an application to an accredited control body. An inspector visits the farm to review cultivation methods, input materials, and overall compliance with organic standards.
  2. Compliance and Record-Keeping
The farm must maintain detailed records of fertilizers, seeds, pest control measures, and harvests. These records are critical to prove that all practices are organic.
  3. Certification Decision
Once the inspection confirms compliance, the control body issues an organic certification, valid for one year.
  4. Regular Controls
Certification is not a one-time event. OrganicToGo Farms are inspected many times a year, to ensure ongoing compliance. The organic certification body performs tests twice a year, and extra soil, leaf, and fruit tests are performed in the field. The Andalusian regional government also performs audits with tests. All inspections are conducted by certified control bodies.

This well established system ensures that when you see the organic certified logo on your food, you can trust it’s genuinely produced according to the highest organic standards.
